Thiobencarb found in the river

Thiobencarb found in the river

Detections of thiobencarb were found at the drinking water intakes for the Cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento on May 27, 28, 29 and 30. Fortunately, the results were j-flagged, which means the numbers were results at or greater than the lab’s method detection limit and less than the reporting limit. Had the results not been j-flagged, we would have a more serious discussion about increasing thiobencarb concentrations in the river.

Thiobencarb Results improving

Thiobencarb monitoring was off to a rough start with nine exceedances of the 1.5 µg/L (parts per billion) performance goal in the agricultural drains. The performance goal, established in 1991, is set in the Central Valley Water Board Basin Plan. Our concern was the exceedances began the second week of monitoring rather than the typical mid-season timing coordinating with Memorial Day.

Thiobencarb Monitoring continues to exceed

The Cal/EPA leadership is taking a higher interest in reviewing programs as a result in the change in the State and Agency Administrations. Compliance with thiobencarb permit conditions are under scrutiny and could result in changes to future use of this important herbicide. The monitoring results are our measure of compliance with the thiobencarb permit conditions

Thiobencarb Monitoring Moves to Fifth and Sixth Weeks

Thiobencarb monitoring results report numbers at most sites on May 30 and June 4. The monitoring numbers exceeded the 1.5 µg/L (parts per billion) performance goal at the upper part of Colusa Basin Drain (CBD5) on May 30, and the lower part of the drainage (CBD1) May 30 and June 4. This now counts as seven exceedances of the performance goal into the sixth week of monitoring.

Thiobencarb Fourth Week of Monitoring

Memorial Day weekend typically marks the fifth week of thiobencarb monitoring with peak use and numbers exceeding the 1.5 µg/L (parts per million) performance goal. For this atypical year, the holiday marked the fourth week of monitoring with numbers at all sites except the Sacramento River location. The monitoring results recovered to acceptable levels after a rough start where the performance goal was exceeded two and three weeks into the program.

Thiobencarb Results Continue to Exceed at Third Monitoring Event

Thiobencarb exceedances over the 1.5 µg/L (parts per million) performance goal with a reading of 2.3 µg/L at the Colusa Basin Drain 5 (CBD5) site off Highway 20 and 2.7 µg/L at the Colusa Basin Drain 1 (CBD1) location outside Knights Landing. There also was a detectable reading at the Sacramento Slough site. These exceedances were from the third monitoring event on May 21.
