Pyrethroid TMDL Monitoring Reveals Concerns

The monitoring results are 12.5 percent survival at CBD5 on May 4. Two days later, the same site received the first thiobencarb detection for the season. We will follow up with the Colusa County Agricultural Commission to track applications close to the site. 

This is the first year we are monitoring pyrethroid insecticides under a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) program. The pyrethroid applied to rice is lambda-cyhalothrin (Warrior, Lambda-Cy, Silencer, etc.).

Hopefully, this is an isolated event and we do not need to implement management practices to maintain compliance with the TMDL.

Nitrate (NO3) in soil can often be found in rural and agricultural areas due to fertilizer, livestock waste, and septic systems.  Nitrate can be highly mobile in soil and can readily leach to groundwater.  According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, when present in groundwater, nitrate can cause serious health effects if consumed.
